My inquisitive and spiritual daughter just called satan a “little dust eater” which initially made my day and gave me a chuckle. But as I rest on this, I’m now wondering if I’ve been missing some deeper meanings in the original curse.

“On your belly you shall go and dust shall you eat all your life.” (Genesis 3:14-15).

“To lick/eat the dust” is an Old Testament (Psalm 72:9) term still used today that means total defeat. Humiliation. A war won. And I can’t help but wonder if it is tied to our “from dust we came and to dust we will go”.

Satan is not only wholly and completely defeated, but he is pronounced not to eat of the life of the Earth as all living things do, but of dust…literally the remains of everything living. The curse brought total submission and everything that satan lives on is death.
